Case Manager Tip

Tools for Case Managers

The sensible case manager avails him/herself of every standard available tool to manage cases, both from a utilization and disability/return to work perspective. Our case manager goals are very straightforward: to provide advocacy for the ill or injured employee, to maintain a productive work status whenever possible, or to return employees to productive work as soon as it is medically feasible and appropriate, while continuously ensuring that employees receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment at the right time while they recover from their illness or injury.

Using The Medical Disability Advisor Disability Duration Guidelines (MDA) and ACOEM's Utilization Management Knowledgebase of Practice Guidelines (UMK) will assist case managers to demonstrate the consistency that they must provide, in terms of both method and measures, to manage typical disability cases, and to set appropriate interventions for non-typical cases which may require escalation to a higher level of scrutiny.

Using these standard tools will assure that all ill or injured employees have equal access to fair and reasonable medical care and return to work options, and will provide a standard and consistent basis on which to measure outcomes.
