Last Thursday Governor Hickenlooper delivered his state of the State address and mentioned Reed Group as a Colorado leader in job creation, along with Intel and DaVita; lofty company to be sure, and we could not be more thrilled. Energy and spirits are high right now at Reed Group as we begin the process of integrating new employees from the Aon Hewitt absence management acquisition. Members of our executive team just returned from a tour of new Reed Group offices and we are doubly excited about the potential of new talent and additional service locations.
In the midst of all this activity and anticipation for a bright future, it seemed appropriate that we take a moment to remember a few other important milestones in Reed Group history. Our company was founded in 1977 by Dr. Presley Reed, as a research organization focused on the therapeutic benefits of returning to work following a serious health condition. Just to put that in perspective, in 1977 modern computer technology was in its infancy, cell phones were a slightly slimmer version of the “Get Smart” shoe phone and the World Wide Web was just a twinkle in Tim Berner-Lee’s eye. 1977 also saw the premiere of the first Star Wars movie and the heyday of disco (along with lava lamps, leisure suits and lots and lots of plaid).
In 1980 Dr. Reed began earnest research on what would eventually become The Medical Disability Advisor, Reed Group’s first return to work guidelines product. This was a decade before congress enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 and 13 years before FMLA became effective in 1993. To say that Presley Reed was a visionary in the absence management industry is an understatement. Dr. Reed’s work not only inspired what Reed Group is today, it helped create the foundation of our industry and provided the framework that has assisted millions of employees in their journey from illness back to health and productivity.
In 1991 we launched our first software product, The Medical Disability Advisor, which was offered on a series of floppy disks – remember those? Just three years later, in 1993, we introduced MDA Case Manager, locally installed software for disability claim management, and the precursor to MDA Absence Manager launched in 2004. Our current software platform, LeavePro, went live as both an internal administrative platform and a SaaS product for carriers and employers in 2009.
Now, nearly 40 years later, the Reed Group presence in Colorado has grown to over 500 employees, with another 1400 employees spanning multiple locations and countries. In early 2014 we moved our corporate headquarters into a state-of-the-art facility, where we enjoy a breathtaking view of the Colorado mountains. Both Dr. Reed and Governor Hickenlooper attended the ribbon cutting ceremony. We now offer outsourced, co-sourced and software products for absence management, serving 228 leave services administration clients, representing approximately 3.2 million lives, and 1,200 software clients, representing approximately 7 million lives. LeaveAdvisor and MDGuidelines, our online tools for compliance and disability duration management are widely used by corporate professionals and healthcare providers.
Are we proud of all that? You bet!
